NEW COMMIT: The University of Minnesota has scored a new verbal commitment for the fall of 2020 from distance standout Chris Nagy of San Diego, Calif.

Nagy, who gets faster as the distance gets longer, does his club swimming with Team Elite and owns three U.S. Open standards. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American most recently competed at Junior Nationals this past summer, registering three best times and an 11th-place showing in the 1500m free. Last winter, he finished 15th in the mile at Juniors West before going on to earn bronze in that event at Carlsbad Speedo Sectionals. Also competing for University City High School, Nagy placed fourth in the 500 free and eighth in the 200 free as a sophomore at the CIF San Diego Section 2 Championships.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Minnesota! The moment I stepped on campus and met the coaches and the team, I knew it was a perfect fit for me. Go Gophers!”

His best times include:

  • 500 free – 4:32.03
  • 1000 free – 9:18.99
  • 1650 free – 15:32.74

Nagy has consistently made improvements each season and will bring valuable depth to the Golden Gophers’ distance freestyle group when he arrives on campus as a member of the class of 2024. He’ll add his talents to a training group that’ll include Cameron Kelley and Aidan Dillon.
