NEW COMMIT: Maple Grove, Minn. breaststroker Kelby Modene has given his verbal commitment to the University of Denver and will suit up for the Pioneers along with Ethan Houck in the fall of 2020.

Modene does his club swimming with Aquajets Swim Team and owns the U.S. Open cut in the 100m breast. He most recently raced both breaststroke events at Junior Nationals this past summer after placing 12th and 13th, respectively, in the 100 and 200 breast at Minneapolis Sectionals. Also competing for Maple Grove Senior High School, Modene is a four-time Minnesota 2A State Championship finalist. He finished fourth in the 100 breast and seventh in the 100 fly as a junior while racing to ninth in the former and 10th in the 200 free during his sophomore season.

He told Swimming World:

“I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Denver. The moment I stepped on the campus and met coach Alicia and Mark I knew this was the perfect place for me to pursue my education and swimming career. A big thank you to my family, coaches and my friends who have supported me over the last couple of years getting to this milestone and dream. Go Pioneers!!!!!”

His best times include:

  • 100 breast – 56.25
  • 200 breast – 2:04.58
  • 200 IM – 1:53.03
  • 100 fly – 50.66

Modene will be a valuable asset to the Pioneers’ breaststroke group when he arrives on campus at the start of the 2020-21 season. He would’ve scored in the A-final of both breaststroke events at the 2019 Summit League Championships where Denver handily won the team title.
