Dean Farris Posts Fastest 200 Free of 2018 at Ivy Championships
Dean Farris stole the show on night three of the 2017 Ivy Championships. Not only did he set meet records in both the 200 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke, he posted the fastest time in the NCAA so far this season in the former coming in at 1:31.12. Combined with those of his teammates, his efforts have given a Harvard a heavy lead at these Championships with 1090 points.
Princeton has earned a comfortable second-place spot with 869 points, while Yale (730) and Columbia (718.5) and will battle it out on day four for third overall. Penn (671.5), Cornell (551) and Dartmouth (392) are currently fifth, sixth and seventh in the team standings.
Tomorrow’s events include the 200 Backstroke, 100 Freestyle, 200 Breaststroke, 200 Butterfly and 1650 Freestyle.
1000 Freestyle
Harvard’s Brennan Novak doubled up on wins at these Championships by collecting the 1000 Freestyle title after winning last night’s 500 as well. The junior won a close race over teammate Logan Houck 8:46.99 to 8:48.80. Both swims were under the previous meet record set by Kei Hyogo of Yale last season. Novak broke his own program record by over three seconds.
The two split evenly in the middle of the race, with Houck in the mix through about the 700 yard mark. Novak was then consistently under 26.50 pace to slightly pull away for the win.
Penn freshman Will Thomas earned third place with a finish of 8:57.55. The swim was his first time under the 9-minute barrier. His blistering 24.34 final fifty gave him enough to pass Zach Snyder and break up a possible Crimson one-two-three finish. Snyder was in third through the 950 mark and ultimately finished fourth.
Penn’s Taylor Uselis (8:59.11), Princeton’s Levy Nathan (9:00.87), Harvard’s Kent Haeffner (9:06.09) and Princeton’s Arthur Markley (9:06.63) placed fifth through eighth.

400 IM
Penn’s Mark Andrew did likewise in the IM events by winning the 400 in a meet, pool and school record time of 3:41.95. He remains undefeated in this event at Ivy League Championships. Hyogo was also under the previous meet mark in 3:43.16 setting a new Yale school record. The race was relatively even through the backstroke, but once again Andrew put in a quick breaststroke leg to command the lead. His 1:01.79 split was the fastest in the field. Hyogo made up some ground on the last 100 but ran out of room to run down Andrew.
Columbia’s Jae Park was in second at the 300 mark but fell to third in 3:45.79. The time was still a new school record by nearly two seconds.
Yale’s Jonathan Rutter took fourth in 3:47.26 while Columbia’s Shane Brett was fifth in 3:50.10. Dartmouth freshman Connor Lamastra was next in 3:51.54 while Princeton’s Sam Tartar was seventh in 3:51.79 and Penn’s Keanan Dols was eighth in 3:54.48.

100 Butterfly
Harvard quickly climbed back to the top of the podium with a winning swim from Steven Tan. His 46.21 100 fly was enough to edge out the competition and give the senior his first individual Ivy League title. Tan took out the race in 21.08 – seven tenths faster than anyone else in the field.
Senior Ben Schafer led a trio of Princeton Tigers in this heat coming in second at 46.80. Classmate Zach Buerger was fourth in 47.01 while junior Cole Buese was fifth in 47.13. Columbia senior Kevin Frifeldt broke up the Tigers with a third-place swim of 46.90.
Harvard’s Raphael Marcoux (47.24) and Ed Kim (47.50) and Yale’s Aaron Greenberg (47.95) rounded out the heat. Penn went one-two in the B final with Sean Lee (47.77) and Emilio DeSomma (47.97) while Cornell placed eleventh through thirteenth from Jack Mahoney (48.21), Jacob Mullin (48.42) and Vincent Declercq (48.59).

200 Freestyle
Harvard’s Dean Farris kept the momentum going as he posted the fastest 200 freestyle in the NCAA so far this year. The swim was a lifetime best good for new meet, pool and school records – Farris was out .09 slower than his best time at the 100 mark, but was three full tenths faster on the final fifty this time around. Last season, only three men were faster than this time.
Yale’s Adrian Lin led the battle for second place with his time of 1:34.26. The swim was a lifetime best and just .01 off the program’s record. His fast opening 100 gave him the advantage as he was able to hold off a charging Michal Zyla of Columbia (1:35.32).
Princeton’s Murphy McQuet was fourth in 1:35.56 and was followed by Harvard’s Mahlon Reihman (1:35.91), Penn’s Luke Snyder (1:36.82), Yale’s Henry Gaissert (1:36.82) and Cornell’s Koppi Kolyvek (1:38.27). Columbia posted the top two swims in the B final out of Nianguo Liu (1:36.35) and Zachary Pear (1:36.85).

Cornell’s Alex Evdokimov broke 52 seconds for the first time in his career racing to a 51.85 for the win, meet, pool and school records. He had both the fastest first and second fifties to secure the win by almost two full seconds. The senior has officially achieved a four-peat in this event.
Harvard’s Daniel Chang (53.82) had a quick second fifty of 28.16 to pass Yale’s Dorje Wu (53.90) for second. Wu was able to set a Bulldog school record and hold off Columbia’s Jack Smith who swam a 54.05 for fourth and Harvard’s Sebastian Lutz who raced to fifth with a 54.19. Columbia’s Zach Thomas (54.23), Yale’s Derek Kao (54.23) and Princeton’s Corey Lau (54.33) placed sixth through eighth.
Penn juniors Colin McHugh (54.27) and Thomas Dillinger (54.64) took the top two spots in the B final.

Farris was back in the pool moments later for another set of broken records in the 100 backstroke. His winning time of 44.81 is the second-fastest swim of the NCAA season thus far. Once again, he led the race from start to finish being the only swimmer out under 22 and the only one back under 24.
Penn junior Mark Blinstrub was the fastest among the rest of heat coming in at 46.69 for second. Princeton’s Alexander Lewis was in the mix for second at the halfway point but finished third with a 47.14 – a lifetime best for the senior. Teammates Cole Buese and Corey Okubo (48.18) were fourth and eighth, respectively.
Cornell’s Dylan Curtis was fifth in 47.81 while Harvard duo Koya Osada (47.84) and Tan (48.03) were sixth and seventh. Following suit, Harvard provided the one-two punch in this B final with great efforts from Eric Whisenant (47.76) and Daniel Tran (48.00).

4 x 100 Medley Relay
Harvard remained on top of the relays at this meet by taking the 4 x 100 Medley in 3:07.83. The team of Farris, Chang, Tan and Marcoux combined for the win. The swim was just off the meet record and NCAA ‘A’ cut time. They had the fastest backstroke (44.83) and butterfly (45.98) splits of all the teams and led the race from start to finish.
Princeton took second in 3:10.96 while Columbia earned big points and a new program record in third with a 3:12.05. Evdokimov and Cornell took fourth in 3:12.14 as the 100 Breaststroke champion split a quick 51.47. Yale’s Aaron Greenberg posted the fastest closing split of the field in 42.80 to bring the Bulldogs into fifth place and a new school record.
Before this event, Penn was in the mix for third overall in the team standings. They fell well out of the race after a disqualification in this relay due to an early takeoff.
