NEW COMMIT: Ian Leighninger of Beavercreek, Ohio, has announced his commitment to swim for Wingate University as a member of the class of 2024.

Primarily a backstroker, Leighninger does his club swimming with Dayton Raiders and own the Winter Juniors cut in the 200 back. He most recently competed at the Southern Premier Invitational where he recorded five lifetime bests after racing both backstroke events at Juniors East in December. He capped off his long course season with 100% best times and two finals appearances at Richmond Futures this past summer. Also competing for Beavercreek High School, Leighninger placed 15th in the 100 back at the Ohio State Championships during his junior season.

He told Swimming World:

“I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to study and swim at Wingate University! The opportunities that God has given me in my sport are overwhelming and I am grateful. All of this would not have been possible without my family supporting me along this journey.  Big thanks to all my Raider coaches and teammates who have pushed me every day! #Onedog #WUswim”

His best times include:

  • 50 back – 24.47
  • 100 back – 51.45
  • 200 back – 1:49.62
  • 200 IM – 1:54.62

Even with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go before suiting up for the Bulldogs, Leighninger will add valuable depth in their backstroke training group. He would’ve scored in the A-final of the 200 back and the B-final of the 100 back at the 2019 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships where Wingate finished fourth overall in the team standings.
