DAVIS, California, October 16. THE California Golden Bears remained close to Bear Territory for their latest big time recruiting score in the Class of 2014. Davis Aquadart Matthew Whittle committed to head coach Dave Durden this afternoon.

Whittle, the 14th-ranked recruit in the Class of 2014 by CollegeSwimming.com, presents the Cal Golden Bears with a dynamic breaststroke threat.

“There are several reason I chose Cal,” Whittle told Swimming World. “First and foremost, I believe it is the best place for me to excel in both academics and in the water. I already have a great relationship with Coach Dave [Durden] and Coach Yuri [Suguiyama], and on my trip the guys made me feel a part of the team. And while I was open to going out of state, Cal is close enough to home so my parents can come to dual meets which is important to me. Go Bears!”

Whittle, the sixth-ranked recruit in the State of California, has developed into a big-time breaststroke weapon under Billy Doughty, who Whittle made sure to credit for his success. Whittle has a stellar 2013 NCSA Junior Nationals live on SwimmingWorld.TV. He clocked a 22.08 50-yard fly, 55.29 100-yard breast and a 1:59.09 200-yard breaststroke. He also chimed in with a 25.83 50-yard breast for the top meet of his life.

Whittle also has some IM versatility with a 1:48.69 in the 200-yard IM from his sectional championships.

He’s also up put up some strong efforts in the long course pool. He owns a 1:04.40 in the 100-meter breast, and a 2:19.86 in the 200-meter breast from Speedo Junior Nationals this past summer, and has every chance to drop some serious time this year.

Whittle could fill a need in the IM events when Cal loses NCAA champion Marcin Tarczynski to graduation after this season. Whittle will also be a part of Cal’s attempts to rebuild its legendary breaststroke program.
