Dara Torres Ties the Knot

By Phillip Whitten

PALM BEACH, Fla., Jan. 17. OLYMPIC heroine Dara Torres, 34, was married yesterday in a private religious ceremony in Palm Beach, Florida to prominent Israeli and Florida surgeon Dr. Izthak "Ike" Shasha, 55.

Torres, who had carved out a successful career as a T.V. sports commentator and host, made a spectacular comeback beginning in 1999 after seven years of retirement from swimming, culminating in two gold and two bronze medals at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. One of only two American women in history to have made four U.S. Olympic teams, she was a member of the 1984, '88, '92 and 2000 teams.

Torres is the second most decorated woman in U.S. Olympic history, having won ten Olympic medals, one fewer than Jenny Thompson. She holds the American record in the 50m freestyle and 50 and 100m butterfly and was a member of the record-setting 400m freestyle and 400m medley relays.

The couple will reside in Jupiter Beach, Florida.
