The first morning of the 2017 Speedo Junior National Championships featured only four races, but featured many names that will be well known in about four years time. One of those names that is already getting to be well known is 17-year-old Dakota Luther of Austin Swim Club. She swam in Budapest at the World Championships in the 200 fly and returned to Juniors in East Meadow for the 200 fly top seed.

Carson Foster, Zoie Hartmann and Daniel Roy are the top seeds in their events. Foster and Roy are both going to be attending the World Junior Championships at the end of the month in Indianapolis.

Women’s 200 Fly

Dakota Luther is fresh off of a 15th place at the 2017 FINA World Championships in the 200 fly as she returned to racing at the Speedo Junior National Championships with the top seed in the 200 fly on Tuesday morning in New York. Luther swam a comfortable 2:11.40, about three seconds off of what she swam to make the Worlds team in June earlier. Luther is ahead of Metroplex’s Lindsay Looney (2:12.59) and Enfinity’s Olivia Carter (2:13.50).

Nation’s Capital’s Isabella Gati (2:14.01), AquaKids’ Mary Smutny (2:14.19), Magnolia’s Lillie Nordman (2:14.21), Issaquah’s Sarah Dimeco (2:14.60) and SoCal’s Elise Garcia (2:14.68) will also swim in the A-final.

If Luther is in the same shape she was in in Budapest, she could challenge the meet record held by Jasmine Tosky from 2010 at 2:09.28, however a third taper is always tough to grasp.
