Colwill Captures One-Meter National Title

INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 3. CHRIS Colwill captured the national championship in men's one-meter Thursday at the 2006 Kaiser Permanente National Diving Championships.

Colwill, fresh off a bronze medal on the event at the 2006 FINA Diving World Cup in China last month, broke open a close contest halfway through to win with 414.35 points. He had a slight three-point lead after three rounds but scored 76.50 points on his fourth dive to take a 17.20 lead with two rounds to go and built his lead from there. Burkley Showe won the silver with 367.20 points, and Matt Cooper, who won the one-meter junior national title last week, took the bronze with 353.85 points.

Two-time Big Ten Diver of the Year and of the Championships Christina Loukas led the women's three-meter field in the semifinals, turning in 277.65-point performance. Margaret Hostage placed second with 275.90 points, and Kelci Bryant, the silver medalist on one-meter on Wednesday and defending three-meter national champion, finished third with 271.65 points. The top 12 finishers in the semifinals advance to Saturday's finals.

In the men's platform prelims, JJ Kinzbach, the 2006 junior national platform champion, led the semifinal field with 402.55 points. Harrison Jones claimed second with 399.50 points, and 2005 national champion Thomas Finchum pocketed third at 391.50 points. The top 12 will compete in Saturday's finals.

The Kaiser Permanente National Diving Championships continue through Saturday, August 5.
