Colorado State Enters 2021 Recruiting Game with Verbals from Emily Chorpening, Katie McClelland

NEW COMMIT: Colorado State University has officially begun their class of 2025 recruiting after receiving a pair of verbal commitments from Tallahassee, Fla. native Emily Chorpening and Katie McClelland of Monument, Colo.

Both talented swimmers will suit up for the Rams at the start of the 2021-22 season. Under head coach Chris Woodard, Colorado State finished fifth at the 2020 Mountain West Championships.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I’m SUPER excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my swimming and academic careers at Colorado State University!!! I’m so thankful to have been given this opportunity to swim and study at this amazing university. I would like to thank all my friends, family, teammates, and coaches for helping me get to where I am today. GO RAMS!!!!”

A talented distance freestyler and IMer, Chorpening swims year-round with Area Tallahassee Aquatic Club and most recently earned three best times at the Florida OT Qualifier and won the mile at the Gator Invite in December. Last summer, she finished 18th in the 1500m free at Greensboro Futures.

Her best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:53.35
  • 500 free – 4:57.25
  • 1000 free – 10:05.43
  • 1650 free – 16:57.38
  • 400 IM – 4:30.36

Also competing for Lawton Chiles High School, Chorpening is a six-time Florida 3A State Championship finalist. She finished seventh in the 200 free and eighth in the 500 free as a junior while taking 10th and sixth, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season.

KATIE McCLELLAND

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I’m extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at Colorado State University! I am so thankful for this opportunity. I want to thank my family, friends, teammates, and coaches for the constant love and support. I can’t wait to call CSU my home! GO RAMS!???”

Primarily a breaststroker and IMer, McClelland does her club swimming with Pikes Peak Athletics and registered four lifetime bests at the CARD Christmas Classic in December. She finaled in two events at Phoenix Sectionals in 2019 and raced five events at Colorado LCM Seniors last summer.

Her best times include:

  • 100 breast – 1:03.46
  • 200 breast – 2:20.28
  • 200 IM – 2:06.71
  • 400 IM – 4:30.08

A rising senior at Lewis-Palmer High School, McClelland is a five-time Colorado 5A State Championship finalist. She placed sixth in the 100 breast and eighth in the 200 IM in her junior campaign while taking 20th in the 100 fly as a sophomore.
