By Brian Savard

FORT COLLINS, Colorado, June 2. LEGACY freshman Steve Schmuhl left his inaugural 5A Colorado State Championship meet as the proud owner of two class records.

Schmuhl hammered out a 1:40.03 200 freestyle, taking down the former 5A standard of 1:41.00 set by J.D. White of Longmont in 2002. Schmuhl tried his hand at the 100 freestyle, edging out the 50 freestyle champion, Conor Brennan of Heritage, by .13 with a time of 45.61. His time bettered the previous class mark of 46.00 set by Nick Kaluk of George Washington in 2001.

Brennan took the 50 freestyle title in a class-record time as well, cranking out a 20.66. That swim bettered Kaluk's 2001 performance of 20.96.

Jay Kim from Regis Jesuit broke the 1:50 barrier for the first time in Colorado High School swimming history, posting a state-record time of 1:49.98. Dave Denniston of Arapahoe held the former mark of 1:50.25, which he set in 1997. Kim also took home the gold medal in the 100 butterfly, clocking a 50.03.

Regis Jesuit nearly missed its 2007 record in the 200 medley relay, but the Raider contingent posted the gold-medal time nonetheless (1:34.74). Regis Jesuit went on to touch out Heritage by .01 in the 400 freestyle relay, turning in the top time of 3:09.60.

Doogie Cohen of Smoky Hill placed first in the diving competition with a score of 561.25. Chatfield's John Fox bested Kevin Moore of Regis Jesuit for second by a score of 494.40-492.30.

Perennial powerhouse Regis Jesuit won the class title by more than 100 points, accumulating 351 points throughout the course of the meet. Cherry Creek placed second in the team standings with 238 points while Heritage rounded out the top three teams with 199 points.
