Colorado Girls High School State Championships

FORT COLLINS, Colorado, February 19. THE Colorado Girls High School State Championships took place Saturday, February 12 at Edora Pool Ice Center (EPIC).

4A Results
Green Mountain's McKenzie Stein won two events and set two 4A State Records. She took the 200 IM in a record-time of 2:02.33 and then repeated the feat with a 55.64 in the 100 fly. Evergreen's Lexie Malazdrewicz and Montrose's Emily Stucky also doubled; Malazdrewicz took the 200 (1:52.78) and 500 free (5:02.60), while Stucky won the 50 (24.35) and 100 free (52.55).

Pueblo South's Mary Saiz finished first in the 100 back (56.90), while Montrose's Logan Morris got the best of the field in the 100 breast (1:05.14). St. Mary's Academy's Alexa Beckwith won the one meter diving with 440.50 points. Thompson Valley won two relays, as Jessi Modlich, Sarah Bracken, Sam Moss, and Marina Fonseca took the 200 medley (1:49.13), while Moss, Alyssa Eidem, Lizzie Bergquist, and Kelly Sheldon won the 200 free (1:39.55). D'Evelyn won the 400 free relay in 3:36.36, with Colleen Olson, Molly Lonneman, Julia Oleksiak, and Madeleine Smith competing.

On the back of their two relay wins, Thompson Valley took home first overall with 319 points, while D'Evelyn (227) and Montrose (210) completed the top three.

5A Results
Regis Jesuit sophomore Missy Franklin lit up the meet, with two wins, two state records, and one National Independent School Record. As previously reported, Franklin won the 100 back in 52.30, erasing Natalie Coughlin's previous National Independent School Record of 52.86 from 1998. However, Franklin missed Rachel Bootsma's overall record of 51.53 set in 2010. Franklin also set a State Record of 22.41 in the 50 free and provided strong legs on two winning relays. She led off the winning 200 medley relay with a 24.44 backstroke split, before Meagan Smith, Alex Todd, and Delaney Lanker completed a 1:44.55 victory. Regis Jesuit also won the 400 free relay, where Hillary Thomas, Todd, and McKenna DeBever set up anchor Franklin, who split a 47.77 on the way to another State Record of 3:32.42.

Two other swimmers, both from Cherry Creek, set Colorado State Records. Jordan Mattern set one in the 200 free (1:47.33), while Bonnie Brandon took the 100 free in a new record of 49.61. Elaine Powell and Fiona Kane joined the duo on the 200 free relay, which took first in another State Record of 1:34.40. Fossil Ridge's Sammie Guay took first in the 200 IM (2:05.40), while Regis Jesuit's Todd took the 100 fly (55.15). Fariview's Abigail Houck won the 500 free (5:00.83), and teammate Kourtney Fosse also took a victory, the 100 breast (1:04.04). Loveland's Michal Bower won the one meter diving with 465.75 points.

Regis Jesuit ended up winning the meet over Cherry Creek, 356.5 to 337 points. Fairview ended up third (166).
