Claire Maiocco, a Trinity Preparatory School junior (Winter Park, FL) and one of the top recruits in Florida’s class of 2017, set a new Short Course Meters National Record in the women’ 100-meter fly with a 1:01.06. Maiocco lowered the original mark, previously set at 1:02.14 by Elizabeth Hill in 2003, by more than entire second.

Maiocco wasn’t finished. Her 200-meter free relay squad, which included Grace Olivardia, Caroline White, and Summer Heidish broke a seven-year old record with a blistering 1:46.98. The record belonged to The Baylor School (Chattanooga, TN), who posted a 1:48.33.

Maiocco’s record-breaking triumphs aren’t her greatest accomplishments, however. She battles juvenile diabetes and must monitor her blood-sugar levels throughout the day. Despite her condition, she’s able to persevere and swim at a high-caliber level.

“I feel fortunate to be able to say we broke 2 National High School Records. Claire’s biggest battle isn’t the 100 Fly, it’s her race against Diabetes. Caroline, Grace and Summer are remarkable young women and I’m excited for them,” Trinity Prep’s coach Rocco Aceto told the Florida Swim Network.
