Cassidy Bayer Flys To First in Prelims of 100 Fly at 2015 FINA World Junior Championships

Cassidy Bayer of the USA shot to the top of the qualifying list for the women’s 100-meter fly with a time of 58.87 during prelims of day five. Bayer succeeded in dropping time from her seed time of 59.00 to put her in a good position to challenge the championship meet record of 58.34 set by Svetlana Chimrova in 2013.

Rikako Ikee of Japan and Lauren Case of the USA battled it out in heat six, finishing .32 seconds apart. Ikee got to the wall first with a time of 59.08 to grab the second place seed, while Case’s time of 59.40 earned her the third place seed for tonight’s semi-finals.

Australia’s Lucia Lassman grabbed fourth overall in prelims with a time of 59.54, also from heat six.

Canada’s Penny Oleksiak turned in a time of 59.80 to grab the fifth place seed. She was followed closely to the wall by Aurora Petronio of Italy who touched with a time of 59.87 from the same heat.

Australia’s Gemma Cooley took seventh overall with a time of 59.94, while Hungary’s Sonja Szokol rounded out the top eight with a time of 1:00.14.

Russia’s Polina Egorova (1:00.23), Spain’s Carmen Balbuena (1:00.32), Slovakia’s Barbora Misendova (1:00.41), Hungary’s Nikolett Federics (1:00.49), Italy’s Ilaria Cusinato (1:00.51), Great Britain’s Laura Stephens (1:00.52), China’s Wang Jingzhuo (1:00.58), and Russia’s Alexandra Chesnokova (1:00.71) round out the top sixteen qualifiers for tonight’s semi-finals.
