NEW COMMIT: Breaststroker and IMer Makayla Sura of Carmel, Ind. has given her in-state verbal commitment to Indiana State University and will join the Sycamores as a member of the class of 2024.

Sura swims year-round with Carmel Swim Club under coach Thomas Burchill and capped off her summer long course season with a pair of best times and a 19th-place finish in the 200m breast at Indiana LCM Seniors. Last winter, she recorded four top-18 finishes at Indiana SCY Seniors and earned 100% lifetime bests at Indianapolis Sectionals.

She told Swimming World:

“I would like to announce my commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at Indiana State University! Thanks to all of my friends, family, and coaches who have supported and challenged me over the years. I can’t wait to be a Sycamore! Go Trees!”

Her best times include:

  • 100 breast – 1:06.31
  • 200 breast – 2:23.63
  • 200 IM – 2:11.65
  • 400 IM – 4:13.38

Sura will add valuable depth to Indiana State’s lineup when she arrives on campus in the fall of 2020 and will have two years of overlap with top returning breaststrokers Megan Schade and Kerry Tepe. She would’ve scored in the B-final of both breaststroke events at the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Championships where the Sycamores finished third overall in the team standings.
