NEW COMMIT: Carmel, Ind. native Jota Iwase has declared his commitment to the University of Chicago and will join the Maroons as a member of the class of 2023.

Iwase swims year-round with Carmel Swim Club and owns a pair of Winter Junior qualifying standards.  He most recently raced four events at Juniors East earlier this month and was a five-time finalist at the Indiana LCM Senior Championships this past summer. He also recorded two lifetime bests at the American Short Course Championships in March. Also competing for Carmel High School, Iwase placed 12th in the 100 fly as a junior after placing 13th in the 100 fly and tenth in the 200 IM during his freshman season at the Indiana State Championships.

He told Swimming World:

“I chose the University of Chicago because of its unparalleled education and exceptional swim program. I can’t wait to be a part of such a talented, hard-working team with an amazing coaching staff! Go Maroons!”

His best times include:

  • 100 fly – 50.56
  • 200 fly – 1:52.05
  • 200 IM – 1:53.68
  • 400 IM – 4:04.42

When he arrives in Chicago in the fall of 2019, Iwase will make an immediate impact in the fly and IM events. He would’ve scored in the A-final of the 400 IM as well as the B-final of the 100 fly, 200 IM and 200 fly at the 2018 UAA Championships where the Maroons finished fourth overall in the team standings.
