NEW COMMIT: Calgary, Alberta backstroker Sebastian Somerset has made his commitment to Cal and will join the Golden Bears for the 2019-20 season.

Somerset does his club swimming with Cascade Swim Club and most recently competed at the Ontario Junior Championships where he finaled in the 200m back. He won the 200m back at the Canadian Junior Championships this past summer after placing second in that event as well as sixth in the 100m back at Canadian Swim Trials in July. He earned gold in the 200m back, silver in the 100m back and bronze in the 50m back at Canadian Swimming Trials in April to earn a spot on Canada’s Junior Pan Pac Team. Somerset then went on to place eighth in the 100m back and tenth in the 200m back at 2018 Junior Pan Pacs in Fiji.

He told Swimming World:

“I’m happy and excited to announce my commitment to the University of California – Berkeley. I loved the atmosphere at Cal when I visited, and to be able to train under world class coaches along side world class swimmers is amazing. I also get the opportunity to attend one of the top universities in the world. I would like to thank my parents, coaches, friends and teachers for supporting me through my swimming career so far. Go Bears!”

In LCM, his best times include:

  • 50m back – 26.14
  • 100m back – 55.99
  • 200m back – 2:00.12
  • 50m free – 24.34

In SCY, those times convert to:

  • 50 back – 22.27
  • 100 back – 47.87
  • 200 back – 1:44.38
  • 50 free – 21.17

Somerset will join a long legacy of backstroke success when he arrives in Berkeley as a member of the class of 2023. His best time (converted to yards) would’ve scored in the B-final of the 200 back at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships and he’ll have two years of overlap with top returning backstrokers Bryce Mefford and Daniel Carr.
