Canada Collects 17 Medals on Third Day of Victoria Age Group Championships

MELBOURNE, Australia, January 12. CANADIANS continued to parade to the medal podium Wednesday at the Victoria State Age Group Swimming Championships which were highlighted by a 1-2-3 finish in the men’s 1,500-metre freestyle. The Canadians compiled five gold, nine silver and three bronze on Wednesday. After three days of competition they have 55 medals.

In the junior men’s 1,500 freestyle, Pascal Wollach of Calgary took the gold in 16:25.33 with Doug Rawlick of Edmonton second in 16:32.88 and Ray Betuzzi of Calgary third in 16:35.25. Greg Gerum of Hamilton was seventh.

Canada was 1-2 in two other finals. In the women’s 200 individual medley for 16-year-olds, Stephanie Horner of Beaconsfield, Que., was first in 2:18.11 and Melanie Dodds of Langley, B.C. was second in 2:20.78. In the men’s 100 butterfly for 16-year-olds, Jonathan Blouin of Quebec City notched his third gold of the competition by clocking 57.11, with Gerum second in 58.31.

Szofia Balazs of Toronto won a team leading fourth gold and fifth medal overall by placing first in the 100 freestyle for 15-year-olds while Amy Harriman Hamilton was fourth. Canada’s women’s 200 medley relay took the gold with Harriman, Elizabeth Hendrick of Calgary, Horner and Emily Wong of Ottawa. Canada B was fourth with Katie Kotlowski of Langley, B.C., Helen Pitchik of Toronto, Kayla Rawlings of Langley and Laura Murray of St. John’s, Nfld.

Other Canadian women silver medalists were Dodds in the 100 butterfly for 16-year-olds, Hendricks in the junior women’s 100 breaststroke and Rawlings in the junior 100 butterfly. For the men, other silver medalists were Gerum in the 200 IM for 16-year-olds, Lutsch in the 200 breaststroke for 15-year-olds and the men’s 200 medley relay with Jake Tapp of Langley, Lutsch, Betuzzi and Wollach.

Other bronze medallists were Evan Buck of Guelph, Ont., in the 100 freestyle for 15-year-olds and Betuzzi in the junior 100 butterfly. Other Canadian finalists for the men were Tapp in fifth in the junior 100 breaststroke, Rawlick sixth in the 200 IM for 16-year-olds and the men’s relay B team with Buck, Jordan Hartney of Richmond, B.C., Blouin and Gerum.

For the women, Anne Schmuck of Victoria was seventh in the junior 100 breaststroke, Pitchik was fourth in the 200 breaststroke for 15-year-olds and Hendrick placed eighth in the junior 100 butterfly.
