Canada Adds to Medal Haul at Victoria Age-Group Championships

MELBOURNE, Australia, January 13. CANADA won five gold medals, four silver and four bronze on Thursday at the Victoria State Age Group Swimming Championships. The Canadian National Junior and Youth team has collected 68 medals after four days of competition at the 10-lane pool, site for the swimming events at the Commonwealth Games in March.

Zsofi Balazs of Toronto added to her team leading medal count with gold in the women’s 200-meter freestyle and bronze in the 200 backstroke for 15 year-olds. Balazs has seven medals so far.

Karah Stanworth-Belleville of Beaconsfield, Que., won the gold ahead of Balazs in the 200 backstroke. The other Canadian winners were Stephanie Horner of Beaconsfield in the junior 400 individual medley, Evan Buck of Guelph, Ont., in the 200 backstroke for 15-year-olds and Greg Gerum of Hamilton in the 100 freestyle for 16-year-olds.

Pascal Wollach of Calgary and Jake Tapp of Langley, B.C., were second and third, respectively, in the junior 100 freestyle while Elizabeth Hendrick of Calgary and Anne Schmuck of Victoria were 2-3 in the women’s junior 200 breaststroke. Also with silver were Curtis Lutsch of Calgary in the 200 freestyle for 15-year-olds and Chelsey Salli of Langley in the women’s 200 IM for 14-year-olds.

Emily Wong of Ottawa added a bronze in the junior women’s 100 freestyle with Kaila Rawlings of Langley in fifth. Natalie Hagan of Etobicoke, Ont., was seventh in the 200 freestyle for 15-year-olds while Lauren Lavigna of Vancouver and Melanie Dodds of Langley were fourth and fifth in the women’s 100 freestyle for 16-year-olds. Dodds was also fourth in the junior 400 IM.
