California, Stanford, USC Battle It Out On Night 2 of Women’s Pac-12 Championship

Federal Way, WA saw some blisteringly fast times tonight on the second evening of finals swimming at the Women’s Pac-12 Championship. It’s been quite a meet between No. 1 Stanford, No. 4 USC, and No. 6 California, with these three teams vying for a convincing lead. At the end of day two, USC has a two point lead over Stanford.
500 Freestyle
The night opened up with a fantastic showing in the 500 free. USC junior Chelsea Chenault took the title with a scorching 4:38.13, over a second faster than what she posted this morning. Second place was secured by the Arizona senior Bonnie Brandon (4:41.77), who just out-touched the Oregon State senior Sammy Harrison (4:41.85). With four women in the A final, USC accumulated a whopping 105 points to their team score.

Not to be outdone, the Stanford freshman Ella Eastin claimed the victory in the 200 IM with a time of 1:52.77, just three one-hundredths ahead of California’s freshman Kathleen Baker, who was in with a 1:52.80. The pair was over two seconds ahead of everyone else in the field, including the third place finisher Kirsten Vose, a freshman from USC (1:55.65). Both Stanford and California made up some ground on USC in this event.

50 Freestyle
California’s junior Farida Osman became one of the fastest women in history to swim the 50 freestyle tonight when she tied for the second fastest time ever with Simone Manuel. Her 21.32 is only slower than Lara Jackson‘s swim from 2009, which was in a relay. What’s more, Osman almost even split the race–she was out in a 10.49 and back in a10.83. Stanford junior Lia Neal was second in the event with a 21.88, while USC’s junior Anika Apostalon was third with a 21.94.

3-Meter Diving
Stanford made up some major ground in the diving events tonight when they took the top two spots and scored another woman into sixth. The conference title went to the sophomore Gracie Leydon-Mahoney with a final score of 379.55. Her senior teammate Alex Clay was second with a score of 362.95, while USC freshman Madison Will was third (344.35). Stanford’s point accumulation from the top eight divers was 84.

200 Freestyle Relay
California made one final push of the night with a convincing victory in the 200 free relay. A team of Osman (21.78), Kirsten Vredeveld (21.70), Rachel Bootsma (21.83), and Amy Bilquist (21.46) clocked a final time of 1:26.77, over a second ahead of the Stanford team of Janet Hu (22.27), Neal (21.62), Ally Howe (21.58), and Lindsey Engel (22.45), who took second with a 1:27.92. The Arizona team of Katrina Konopka (22.33), Annie Ochitwa (21.88), Paige Kremer (22.25), and Taylor Schick (21.72), nabbed third with a 1:28.18.
