Cal Scores Big 2022 Verbal Pledge from Versatile Zachary Tan of DART Swimming

NEW COMMIT: Phoenix, Calif. native Zachary Tan, one of the top recruits in the Class of 2026, has announced his verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley beginning in the fall of 2022.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of California Berkeley! I would like to thank my parents for their unwavering support, and all the coaches I have met in my journey who have believed in me. Go Bears!!”

A versatile swimmer, Tan trains with DART Swimming and owns the Olympic Trials cut in both IM events. He most recently earned a best time in the 100m free at the Toyota U.S. Open last month and had five top-15 finishes at College Station Sectionals back in February.

Tan also represents Singapore on the international stage. At the 7th FINA World Junior Championships in Budapest, he raced five events with his highest finish being a 15th-place showing in the 400m IM.

His best times include:

200 IM – 1:47.23
400 IM – 3:48.84
100 free – 45.70
200 free – 1:39.54
100 back – 49.74
200 back – 1:46.56
100 breast – 55.43
200 breast – 1:58.17

Tan will add valuable depth to the Golden Bears’ lineup in a number of different events when he arrives on campus at the start of the 2022-23 season.

Under head coach Dave Durden, Cal earned their third-straight Pac-12 Championship title and were crowned National Champions after a convincing team win at NCAAs in 2019.
