Cal Golden Bears Close NCAAs With 400 Free Relay Come From Behind Victory
The Cal Golden Bears closed out the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships from Greensboro with a win in the 400 freestyle relay at 2:46.60. The team of Bjorn Seeliger (42.22), Ryan Hoffer (40.86), Destin Lasco (41.74) and Hugo Gonzalez (41.78) came from behind to beat Florida at 2:46.88. Cal has now won both the sprint free relays this week in Greensboro.
Florida was leading through 300 yards with the team of Adam Chaney (41.74), Kieran Smith (41.27), Eric Friese (41.45) and Trey Freeman (42.42) as the Gators have placed in the top four in all five relays this week and will place third as a team overall.
Louisville won the final heat but finished third overall at 2:47.98, backing up their 200 medley relay victory last night. The Cardinals had Haridi Sameh (41.94), Nick Albiero (42.09), Michael Eastman (42.05) and Colton Paulson (41.90) finish third as the Cardinals placed fifth as a team this week, matching a program high.
Texas finished in fourth and solidified its 15th NCAA team title as the team of Daniel Krueger (41.79), Chris Staka (42.32), Jake Sannem (42.54) and Drew Kibler (41.63) had four safe starts to gather 30 points and a 27 point win.
NC State (2:48.47), Virginia Tech (2:48.77), Alabama (2:48.86) and Virginia (2:49.71) also finished in the top eight in the relay.
The quickest splits outside the top four came from Alabama’s Matt King (41.63), NC State’s Luke Miller (41.68), Indiana’s Van Mathias (41.77) and NC State’s Hunter Tapp (41.79).
California now has ten NCAA titles in the 400 freestyle relay as the 2021 team joins the teams from 1985 – 1987, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2010 and 2011 as winners of the events for the Golden Bears.
