Cailey Grunhard Sets 2 Kansas HS State Records as Blue Valley Southwest, Shawnee Mission East Take Titles

Meet records fell in the Kansas High School girls’ state championships today in Topeka.


Blue Valley Southwest won the 1A-5A Kansas state high school championship title Saturday afternoon when the school scored 312 points. Shawnee Mission-Bishop Miege finished runner up with 249 points.

Bishop Miege won today’s opening and closing relays. In the 200 yard medley relay Ava FordFranceska Hernandez-Nietling, Cailey Grunhard, and Cassie Grunhard combined for a 1:47.99, a new 1-5A state record. In the 400 freestyle relay, Grunhard, Grunhard, Ford, and Ellie Platt posted a 3:40.41 for the state championship.

Two more state records fell in individual events. Cailey Grunhard won the 100 butterfly, touching far ahead of the heat in 53.26, and well under her own state record of 55.35. Isabelle Finzen of Blue Valley Southwest out touched Bishop Carroll’s Sydney Schmidt 58.47 to 58.86 for runner up honors.

Cailey Grunhard also demolished the competition in the 100 backstroke with her 55.15, just under the state record of 55.58. Taylor Kostboth of Trinity Academy finished second in 58.76 and Maize-South’s Mia Gibson also slid under a minute with her 59.85.

Katelyn Blattner of Wichita-Heights was well ahead of the field in the 200 freestyle. The junior touched in 1:51.49. Cassie Grunhard was runner up with a 1:55.73, just .02 ahead of Topeka-Seaman’s McKynley Larson in 1:55.75.

Blattner was the only swimmer under five minutes in the 500, touching in 4:58.55. Larson finished second in 5:05.88 while Brooke Dreiling of Andover-Central touched third in 5:12.09.

Blue Valley Southwest swimmers Finzen and Logan Johnsen finished 1-2 in the 200 IM with times of 2:09.55 and 2:10.90. Dreiling rounded out the podium with a 2:12.72.

Trinity Academy swimmers topped the podium in the next event. Kostboth led the way in 23.79, just .02 from the 50 freestyle state record and Kendall Kilgore touched in 24.26. Independence’s Lexi Carr also dipped under the 25 second marker with a 24.97.

Kilgore won the longer sprint, stopping the clock in 52.82 in the 100, ahead of Cassie Grunhard in 53.87. Carr was third again, this time in 54.57.

Johnsen won her second event by a slim margin, finishing the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.64. Hernandez-Nietling was just behind in 1:06.89. Independent’s Madison Martin earned third in 1:08.37.

The 200 freestyle relay crown went to Blue Valley Southwest’s Maddie AllenMadison RuffaloMadison Batkiewicz, and Gabbi Miller in 1:42.59.

Freshman Haylee Weiss from Emporia was the one meter diving state champion scoring 449.05 points, clearing the state record of 436.70 points. Becca Gregory of Blue Valley Southwest was not far behind with 431.70 points. Third place finisher Kailey Naysmith also cleared 400 points with 400.90.


Shawnee Mission East swept the relays on their way to a team victory, with 386 points. They were first to the wall in the 200 medley relay as Sarah AllegriMary BootonBonnie Longan, and Hannah McPhail touched in 1:49.21. Allegri, McPhail, Emma Linscott, and Crissie Blomquist combined for the 200 free relay title, touching in 1:37.85. In the 400 freestyle relay, Blomquist, Longan, Linscott, and Izzy Smith finished in 3:36.31.

Lawrence Free State finished second overall with 289 points.

Blomquist won the first individual event, finishing the 200 freestyle in 1:50.83. Shawnee Mission North’s Joely Merriman out touched Lawrence Free State’s Cierra Campbell 1:53.07 to 1:53.31 for runner up honors.

The 200 IM was close as well. Wichita East’s Katerina Savvides stopped the clock in 2:07.23. Shawnee Mission Northwest’s Hailey Brull was just behind in 2:07.92. Emily Guo of Lawrence was third in 2:11.49.

Sydney Sirimongkhon-Dyck of Lawrence Free State was the only swimmer to clear the 24 second barrier. The senior touched in 23.65. Wichita East’s Madison Allen won silver in 24.60 while Olathe Northwest’s Brenna Gaul won bronze in 24.70.

Brull improved on her runner up finish in the 200 IM to win the 100 butterfly in 56.85. Linscott was over a second behind in a 58.01, while her teammate Bonnie Longan finished third in 58.90.

Blomquist was the only swimmer under five minutes in the 500 on her way to her second victory of the night, when she touched in 4:56.27. Campbell was the runner up with a 5:07.12 and Lawrence’s Morgan Jones finished in 5:12.44.

Allegri won an individual title in the 100 backstroke with her time of 55.65, just .02 off the state record. Savvides got silver in 56.23 and Longan won bronze in 58.92.

The 100 breaststroke title went to Topeka’s Elena Almoguera with a 1:06.06. Aiden Chan of Wichita East finished in 1:07.62 and Emily Guo of Lawrence was third with a 1:08.93.

Blue Valley teammates Morgan Hoffman and Emily Bridges posted scores of 401.55 and 390.25 to finish first and second on the one meter board. Blue Valley North’s Annie Turner was third with 390.00 points.
