Caeleb Dressel took his second win of the 2021 TYR Pro Swim Series in Mission Viejo with a 51.61 in the 100 butterfly from lane 1 as he held off Luis Martinez (51.77) from the middle of the pool. Dressel earlier won the 200 freestyle ahead of Andrew Seliskar, who was also in this 100 fly field.
Seliskar was third at 52.21 ahead of fellow Cal postgrads Ryan Murphy (52.27) and Tom Shields (52.39).
Dressel’s swim makes him the fastest American this year, passing Shaine Casas (51.91) in the national rankings as Dressel is the two-time reigning World champ in the 100 butterfly and is the favorite to win the event in Tokyo. The second spot behind Dressel looks fairly wide open at the moment in American circles, as Shields was the second American finalist at the last Olympics with Michael Phelps, who has since retired. Shields is searching for his second Olympic berth as his time today was only a tenth slower than his 52.2 season best.
Kelsi Dahlia took a win in the 100 butterfly with a 58.11 on Friday morning at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Mission Viejo as she led from start to finish and was long into the wall. Dahlia improved on her season best of 58.2 from March as she is the second fastest American thus far in 2021 behind Regan Smith, who is not currently in Mission Viejo racing.
Dahlia has been the main butterflyer for the United States since 2017 as she has been on the gold medal winning medley relays at the last two World Championships. She won today ahead of Texas A&M grad Beryl Gastaldello (58.56) and Katie McLaughlin (58.56), who just got out of the 200 free where she tied for third. McLaughlin was the other American representative in this event at the 2019 Worlds as she will be a favorite in multiple events at this summer’s Trials.
18-year-old Stanford commit Lillie Nordmann, who is better at the 200 fly, was fourth at 59.09 ahead of Tennessee postgrad Maddy Banic (59.26).
