Burns, Penfold, Mills Impress as Queensland Champs End

BRISBANE, Jan. 17. ONLY one record was broken on the final day of the Queensland Open and Age Championships at the Chandler Aquatic Centre in suburban Cleveland, near Brisbane, but there were some fine swims.

Andrew Burns of Toongabbie won the men's 200m backstroke in a solid 2:02.11, after posting an even faster 2:01.93 in prelims.

With Grant Hackett passing on the 1500m free, the event in which he holds the world record and is defending Olympic and World champion, Miami's Stephen Penfold cruised to a gold medal in 15:23.85.

Leith Brodie, of Albany Creek, put an exclamation point on his dominance of the Boys 16 age group, winning two more events today: the 100m backstroke in 58.37 and the 200m IM in 2:07.39, each time just missing the state mark.

The first four finishers in the 11 Year-Old Boys' 100m backstroke bettered the Queensland All-Comers record — the only event in which a state record fell. Miami's Dan Smith took the gold in 1:10.18, 2.71 seconds ahead of Jackson Bailey and some four seconds under the old mark.

Swimming in her home pool, freestyler Alice Mills tried her hand at the 200m IM in the Girls 16 age group, and came up a winner in 2:17.10, just missing the Queensland state record of 2:16.31, set by Jodie Clatworthy 15 years ago.
