Brendan Burns Helps Indiana Run the Table against Auburn, Missouri

Brendan Burns won all three of his events as Indiana ran the table in both the men’s and women’s individual events in a nonconference tri-meet with Auburn and Missouri on Wednesday.

Indiana won all four of its meets by wide margins, the closest a 59-point win over Auburn on the women’s side.

Men’s

  • No. 5 Indiana 196, No. 20 Missouri 101

Women’s

  • No. 10 Indiana 198, Missouri 98

In both the men’s and women’s competition, Indiana exhibitioned it’s A and B 200 medley relays, which then posted the top two times. (In the women’s, there was a tie between Indiana’s B and the Auburn A squad.)

Burns, Jassen Yep, Tomer Frankel and Mikkel Lee went 1:26.54 for the Hoosiers men. Luke Barr, Josh Matheny, Finn Brooks and Gavin Wright went 1:26.79.

Burns won the 100 backstroke in 47.17, the 200 butterfly in 1:44.80 and the 200 back in 1:44.14.

Ahmed Hafnaoui routed the 1,000 free field with a time of 8:55.74, winning by 24.01 seconds. He won the 500 free in 4:18.62, 10 seconds up on the field.

Rafael Miroslaw won the 100 free in 43.36 and the 200 free in 1:33.42. He was fourth in the 50 free in 20.00, after Lee won in 19.86 and Brooks took second in 19.92. Yep swept the breaststroke events, going 52.78 in the 100 and 1:54.71 in the 200. His time of 1:48.98 in the 200 individual medley was second to Barr’s 1:46.56. Barr was third in the 100 back. Frankel won the 100 fly in 47.20 and was third in the 200 free.

Auburn’s Nathaniel Stoffle was second in both backstroke events and third in the 100 fly. Michael Bonson finished second in the 200 free and 500 free. Kalle Makinen took third in both sprint freestyle swims.

Missouri took home second-place results via Logan Ottke (100 breast), Jan Zubik (200 fly) and Grant Bochenski (100 free).

Indiana’s women’s team was similarly dominant. Ching Gan won the 500 free and 1,000 free. (She also finished fourth in the 200 free as an exhibition swimmer the event after the 1,000). Indiana went 1-2-3 in the 200 free, Anna Peplowski winning in 1:46.31 and Kristina Paegle second.

Paegle won the 50 free (22.45) and 100 free (49.06). Ashley Turak posted the second-best time in both. Peplowski also won the 200 backstroke.

Brearna Crawford swept the breaststroke events. Kacey McKenna and Mya DeWitt went 1-2 in the 100 back. Anna Freed scored wins in the 200 fly and 200 IM. Lily Hann won the 100 fly.

Auburn kept the pressure on as long as it could. Averee Preble was second to Gan in both distance events. Meghan Lee was the runner-up in the 200 fly, 200 back and 100 fly. Hannah Ownbey was the runner-up to Freed in the 200 IM.
