NEW COMMIT: Westerville, Ohio native and high school junior Janessa Mathews has opted to stay in-state with her recent verbal commitment to the Buckeyes for the fall of 2020. Her older brother, Jason Mathews, is currently a freshman on Ohio State’s roster.

A local product, Mathews swims year-round with the Ohio State Swim Club and owns the U.S. Open standard in both breaststroke events. She finished third in the 100 breast and ninth in the 200 breast at Juniors East last month after racing both of those events at Nationals. She achieved 100% lifetime bests at Phillips 66 Nationals this past summer where she placed 15th in the 100m breast. Also competing for Westerville North High School, Mathews earned the bronze medal in the 100 breast at the Ohio State Championships during both her freshman and sophomore seasons. She has also earned NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for her efforts.

She told Swimming World:

“I’m super excited to officially announce my verbal commitment to swim for The Ohio State University! So thankful for family, coaches, and friends who have helped me get to where I am today. Can’t wait to be part of such a great team! #GoBucks”

Her best times include:

  • 50 breast – 28.38
  • 100 breast – 1:00.90
  • 200 breast – 2:13.25
  • 200 IM – 2:06.76

Even with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go before suiting up for Ohio State, Mathews will make an immediate impact in their breaststroke group that will include Hanna Gresser. She would’ve scored in the B-final of both breaststroke distances at the 2018 Big Ten Championships where the Buckeyes finished third overall in the team standings.
