NEW COMMIT: Boston University has earned their first verbal commitment for the 2020-21 season and beyond from Inver Grove Heights, Minn. native and talented backstroker Lara Mitchell.

Mitchell, who owns the Winter Juniors standard in the 100 back, does her club swimming with Blackline Aquatics and recently placed ninth in the 100m back at Rochester Speedo Sectionals. This past March, she earned gold in the 100 back and silver in the 200 back at the Minnesota State Championships. Last summer, she was the 100m back runner-up at Minnesota LCM Seniors before going on to finish fourth in both the 50m back and 100m back at the TYR Summer Senior Championships.

Also competing for Eagan High School, Mitchell is a four-time Minnesota Class AA State Championship finalist and has also earned both NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors. She took fifth in the 100 back and 15th in the 50 free as a junior after earning silver in the former event during her sophomore season.

She told Swimming World:

“I am beyond excited to announce my commitment to continue my academics and swimming at Boston University! I fell in love with the campus and team environment. I loved to see the bond the swimmers had with all of the coaches. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing school and swim team. Can’t wait to Terr it up! #rollterriers”

Her best times include:

  • 50 back – 26.48
  • 100 back – 55.59
  • 200 back – 2:01.56
  • 50 free – 24.28
  • 100 free – 53.53

Mitchell is a huge pick-up for the Terriers and will fill in a much-needed backstroke gap; her best times would’ve ranked at the top of their lineup this past season. She would’ve scored in the A-final of the 100 back as well as the B-final of the 200 back at the 2019 Patriot League Championships where Boston finished fifth overall in the team standings.
