NEW COMMIT: Boise State University has picked up a verbal commitment for the fall of 2020 from four-time Winter Juniors qualifier Samantha Nickell of Yucaipa, Calif.

Primarily a backstroker and IMer, Nickell does her club swimming with Riverside Aquatic Association and most recently raced two events at Junior Nationals this past summer. Last winter, she competed in four races at Juniors West before going on to place 17th in the 100 back at Carlsbad Speedo Sectionals.

Also competing for Redlands East Valley, Nickell has competed at the CIF State Championships each of high school seasons thus far. The two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American earned silver in the 200 IM and bronze in the 100 back at the CIF Southern DII Section meet as a junior after finishing sixth and fifth, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season.

She told Swimming World:

“I am more than excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at Boise State University! I’m beyond blessed to have been given the opportunity to swim with such amazing coaches and teammates. I would like to thank everyone who’s supported me throughout this journey, especially my family, friends, coaches, and everyone at Boise who helped make this possible! Go Broncos! #bronconation”

Her best times include:

  • 50 back – 26.08
  • 100 back – 55.59
  • 200 back – 2:00.59
  • 200 fly – 2:02.74
  • 200 IM – 2:05.34
  • 400 IM – 4:28.86

Nickell’s versatility will be extremely beneficial when she suits up for the Broncos as a member of the class of 2024. She would’ve scored in the B-final of the 200 fly as well as the C-final of the 100 back, 200 back, and 400 IM at the 2019 Mountain West Championships where Boise State finished third overall in the team standings.
