NEW COMMIT: Backstroker Kate Saczawa of Powell, Ohio, has announced her intention to continue her academic and swimming career at Purdue University beginning in the fall of 2020. Her father was a former swimmer for the Boilermakers.

Saczawa, who owns the U.S. Open standard in the 100 back and the Winter Juniors cut in the 200 back, swims year-round with Ohio State Swim Club for head coach Kyle Goodrich. She placed fourth in the 50m/100m back as well as fifth in the 200m back at Ohio LCM Seniors this past summer before going on to race two events at Cleveland Sectionals. Last winter, she earned a best time at Indianapolis Sectionals after competing in four events at Juniors East.

A current senior at Olentangy Liberty High School, Saczawa is a three-time Ohio State Championship finalist, most recently placing 15th in the 100 back during her junior season. The NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American has also earned First Team Ohio All-State, as well as Second Team Ohio All-State, honors four times total throughout her career thus far.

She told Swimming World:

“I’m so blessed to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at Purdue! Thank you to all who have given me support and encouragement throughout this process. So excited to be a part of an amazing team. Boiler UP!”

Her best times include:

  • 50 back – 26.31
  • 100 back – 55.43
  • 200 back – 2:01.41

When she arrives in West Lafayette as a member of the class of 2024, Saczawa will add her talents to a backstroke training group led by Mallory JumpTessa Wrightson, and Natalie Myers. It took a 54.31/1:58.80 to score in the 100/200 back at the 2019 Big Ten Championships, but Saczawa has consistently made improvements each season and is fresh off a successful long course summer.
