Boglarka Kapas, Maria Vilas Vidal Enter World’s Top 5 in 1500 Prelims at Euros
Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas rose from the seventh best time in the world this year to third in the 1500 freestyle. Swimming in the heat after Mireia Belmone Garcia, in prelims of the 2016 European Championships she bested the Spaniard’s time by .31, stopping the clock in 16:14.43. That swim makes her the top seed for tomorrow night’s final. Kapas also won the 800 earlier this week.
Belmone Garcia touched first in heat one in 16:14.74. She already holds the top time in the world this year with a 16:08.38 from the Spanish Spring Championships.
Her Spanish teammate Maria Vilas Vidal was just behind with a 16:15.50 in heat two. That time now ranks fifth in this year’s world rankings, just faster than her previous 16:17.10.
