Bob Mattson Bound for Delaware Sports Hall of Fame

WILMINGTON, Del., April 26. DURING his illustrious coaching career, Bob Mattson was the man behind the finest swimmers to come out of Delaware. Now, he's being rewarded for his efforts.

On May 18, Mattson will be inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame, along with nine other inductees. Mattson made his mark as the head man at the Wilmington Aquatic Club from the 1960s through the 1990s and developed a number of Olympians.

Among the athletes mentored by Mattson were Steve Gregg and Jennifer Franks. Gregg was the Olympic silver medalist in the 200 butterfly at the 1976 Games while Franks held American records in the 200 I.M. and 400 I.M. during the 1970s. Mattson also molded the careers of Seth Van Neerden and Dave Johnson.

Mattson also made his mark as an athlete, as he was the 1955 NCAA champion in the 200 breaststroke for North Carolina State.
