Big Ten Women’s Championships Day 1 Finals: Gophers Ahead
Here is what happened the first night of the Big Ten Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships at Purdue.
200 medley relay
Minnesota took the early lead by winning the 200-yard medley relay on Wednesday. Tevyn Waddell, Lindsey Horejsi, Danielle Nack and Zoe Avestruz finished in a Big Ten record 1:35.55.
Indiana was runner-up as Kennedy Goss, Lilly King, Gia Dalesandro and Alexandra Rockett finished in 1:35.74, just behind the Golden Gophers.
Wisconsin’s Jessica Unicomb, Marissa Berg, Elizabeth Nelson and Chase Kinney were third in 1:36.41, followed by Ohio State (1:37.23), Michigan (1:37.33), Purdue (1:38.30), Iowa (1:38.99) and Rutgers (1:39.93).
800 free relay
It was no surprise the Michigan won the 800-yard freestyle relay at the Big Ten Championships, but the Wolverines managed to bring a surprise. Yirong Bi, Siobhan Haughey, Gabby DeLoof and Gillian Ryan set the Big Ten Conference, meet and pool record, winning in 6:55.34 — five seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Wisconsin’s Abigail Jagdfeld, Jessica Unicomb, Emmy Sehmann and Cierra Runge finished second in 7:00.05.
Minnesota was third (7:00.61), followed by Indiana (7:04.50), Ohio State (7:06.53), Northwestern (7:06.
