Big 12 Weekly Preview: Texas Hosts Pro Swim, TCU Hosts WVU
As training trips come to an end and spring semesters begin, we are set for intense action all over the Big 12 conference. The Austin Pro Swim Series will take place just miles away from a Big 12 dual between TCU and WVU while Iowa State will travel to Northern Iowa.
Austin Pro Swim Series
The University of Texas men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will host the Austin stop of the 2018 TYR Pro Swim Series where both squads will likely go head to head with the world’s best swimmers. This long course-meters meet will also serve as a solid indicator of how the rest of the nation is swimming into this summer’s Pan Pacific Championships.
Longhorn senior Joseph Schooling is notably absent from the meet, which presents freshman standout Sam Pomajevich an opportunity to take the lead in the butterfly events. Pomajevich will have to take on UT alums James Cooper and Jack Conger in both butterfly events, which will provide for some exciting racing.
Psych sheets for this weekends meet can be found here.
TCU hosts WVU
Outside of the PSS meet in Austin, Texas Christian University will host a conference matchup with West Virginia University just across the state.
Both teams are coming off training trips, with about a month-long gap in between their last competition. WVU was supposed to face off against rival University of Pittsburgh last weekend, though, due to malfunctions in at the WVU natatorium, the meet was postponed to January 18th.
West Virginia comes in as the favorite with their total of 16 NCAA “B” cuts between the two squads. TCU hasn’t achieved any NCAA cuts yet this season and comes in with a significantly shorter than WVU’s. Mountaineer sibling duo Duo Nate Carr and Morgan Carr will look to lead the mountaineers in the individual medley events while teammate Emma Harris should be able to thrown down a solid performance after her impressive showing in the breaststroke at the Ohio State Invitational, where she earned a NCAA “B” cut.
Iowa State at Northern Iowa
The Iowa State cyclones will take on the panthers from the University of Northern Iowa this weekend. The cyclones are coming off a narrow loss to in-state rival Iowa, but still hold a 3-1 record this season. UNI holds a record of 3-2, but has not raced since mid-November at the Kansas Classic. The panthers are scheduled to host Loras & Iowa Central on Friday before their matchup with Iowa State on Saturday.
The meet can be followed live, here.
