Big 12 Championships, Night 4: Joleigh Crye Ends Arizona State Sweep Hopes
Night 4 of the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships dawned with every swimming gold medal having been taken home by an Arizona State swimmer.
That streak came to an end Friday night at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center, thanks to Joleigh Crye of Cincinnati in the 100 breaststroke. But there was plenty of gold to go around for the Sun Devils before that. They finished the night on a down note, with Arizona edging ASU in the women’s 200 free relay and a record men’s 200 free time by Arizona State getting wiped out by DQ.

Women’s 200 butterfly
Deniz Ertan, the runner-up in the 500 freestyle, won the 200 butterfly in 1:54.92. She was nearly two seconds clear of the field.
Houston boosted its team placement with second and third, Adelaide Meuter going 1:56.85 and Sydney Nethercutt another second behind. Houston also took sixth and seventh. Arizona State didn’t lose ground, though, with Grace Lindberg fourth and Sonia Vaishnani fifth after two top-three finishes.

Men’s 200 butterfly
The biggest single swim of the night didn’t bring a season-best for Ilya Kharun, but it was an A cut of 1:39.41 to easily beat the field and keep Arizona State’s streak alive. Kharun, who doesn’t appear near fully rested, has been 1:38.74 in-season. His finals time allows the meet record, which belongs to Jack Conger of Texas, to survive by .24 seconds.
It was just – “just” has become a relative term – 1-4-6 for ASU, with Filip Senc-Samardzic fourth. In between was two Arizona swimmer, Haakon Naughton taking the silver medal in 1:40.67 and Joel Nace third in 1:42.76.

So ends the Arizona State gold monopoly in swimming, thanks to Joleigh Crye of Cincinnati, who went 58.09 to win.
This event was always going to be the one most likely to do it with a pair of NCAA holdovers from last year’s field. Crye was third at this meet and 13th at NCAAs, each time a spot ahead of Houston’s Henrietta Fangli.
The two tangled again Friday, Crye besting her by .39 seconds in prelims, then building a big lead to hold off her charge at night by just .03 seconds. With the A cut of 58.01, both are well within the recent NCAA selection times.
BYUs Mackenzie Miller is as well, finishing third in 58.60. She was only .25 off Fangli when they turned for home. Arizona’s Eleni Gewalt finished fourth, with Arizona’s Iza Adame just managing fifth.

Andy Dobrzanski restored normal service by getting Arizona State to the top step, but it wasn’t easy. Five swimmers were separated by .65 seconds, and Dobrzanski was second to TCU’s Jadon Wuilliez at the 75-yard wall. Dobrzanski came home quickest, his 51.75 getting gold. Wuilliez, who was third last year, finished second in 52.03. Third was Arizona’s Tavner Wisdom in 52.33, .02 up on Oscar Bilbao of Arizona State. Next behind him was another freshman, BYU’s Peter Etzold.

Caroline Bentz keeps dropping time in the 100 back, an event she entered with a 51.79 best time. She’s down to 51.22, with a gold medal to boot, besting the field by more than a second. It’s the senior’s second Big 12 title of the week, to go with the 50 free.
Houston’s Lottie Cullen was second in 52.88. With Elizabeth Jimenez fourth, the Cougars have opened an 80-point edge on Arizona for second place. The Wildcats had Paige Armstrong in third.

The podium domination is back for Arizona State, with Jack Wadsworth leads Lucien Vergnes to the wall. Wadsworth went 45.01 to get the win. The freshman Vergnes, who edged Wadsworth for the leadoff leg of the 400 medley relay in which he went 45.81, took silver in 45.46. With the top-two sweep, ASU’s lead over Arizona is 441 points.
Ryan Hardy of Arizona finished third in 45.64. Justin Heimes of West Virginia was fourth in 46.07, with Cincinnati’s Hunter Gubeno sixth. Heimes was fourth last year, Gubeno was sixth and TCU’s Edgar Cicanci, who finished eighth on Friday, had been third a year ago.

Men’s platform diving
Utah grad student Jesco Helling was fifth on both boards but got to the top in podium, scoring 362.75 in finals to get the gold. He had been 362.95 in prelims to lead the way wire to wire all day.
Second was Cincinnati freshman Ramez Diaa, who scored 357.80. Diaa had been 11th on 1-meter and 14th on 3-meter. Third went to Elliott Dillon of TCU, his second bronze of the week to go with 1-meter.
Four divers made the finals of all three male events, including Helling. Lance Stallworth of Arizona State led that crowd in fourth on platform after consecutive sevenths. Gage Dubois was sixth and Elias Petersen of Utah seventh.
TCU’s David Ekdahl, who won both springboards, finished 19th.

Women’s 200 freestyle relay
It’s thus far been a week of frustration wrought on Arizona by its in-state rival, but the Wildcats exacted a modicum of revenge Friday. Arizona got the win in 1:26.92, strengthening their A Cut and nearing the meet record set by Texas last year at 1:26.66. Lexi Duchsherer, Julia Wozniak, Riley Botton and Alyssa Schwengel were the quartet, Botton leading the entire field with a split of 21.44. Arizona stitched together three 21s to back Duchsherer’s fastest leadoff leg of 22.07.
Arizona State was second in 1:28.57, nearly a second slower than they had been in-season despite 21s by Erin Milligan and Caroline Bentz. They already have the A cut. Cincinnati was third in 1:29.65.

Drama to end the night: Arizona State appeared to win a conference record 1:13.18, but the time was erased by a DQ, apparently on the handoff from the first leg to Ilya Kharun. That wipes out the second-fastest time in the nation this year.
It means that Arizona gets the win, despite having been 4.1 seconds slower in 1:17.28, a time that is outside the B cut. Ralph Daleiden Ciuferri, Hunter Ingram, Jack Donovan and Tomas Lukminas comprised the squad, Ingram leading the way with a 18.17 split. TCU was second, BYU third.
