Betuzzi Closes Out Stellar Week at Speedo Western Canadian Championships

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, February 21. RAY Betuzzi of Calgary won his fifth individual gold medal with a victory in the men’s 200-meter freestyle (1:48.53) on Sunday to conclude the 2006 Speedo Western Canadian Swimming Championships which were held at the Pan Am pool. Betuzzi dominated the freestyle races by placing first in the 50-100-200 and 400 races this week. He also won the 50 butterfly and helped the University of Calgary to four relay gold medals. Last year Betuzzi set a Canada Games record with seven gold and two bronze medals.

Chad Murray of Calgary ended his week’s work with three gold including Sunday’s win in the 100 butterfly (55.03) while Braeden Taylor of Winnipeg also collected three gold, completing a golden sweep in the breaststroke events with Sunday’s 100-meter victory in 1:04.89. Cameron Hyder of Calgary took the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:21.49.

There were four triple winners in women’s open competition. Calgarians Erica Morningstar and Jillian Tyler earned a third gold in the 200 freestyle (2:00.28) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.01), respectively, while Melanie Dodds of Langley, B.C., was first in the 400 IM (4:50.60) for her third title. Landice Yestrau of Winnipeg completed a triple golden performance in the backstroke events with her win in Saturday’s 200-meter race.
