ZAGREB, Croatia, June 16. COMPETING at the Golden Bear Swim Meet in Europe earlier this month, Brazil’s Henrique Barbosa established a South American record in the 200-meter breaststroke. Barbosa clocked 2:15.40 in the four-lap event to dispatch the 2003 standard of 2:15.63, held by Thiago Pereira. Barbosa also holds the South American record in the 100 breast.
Barbosa’s performance arrived just months after he packaged a spectacular showing at the NCAA Championships. Representing California, Barbosa earned collegiate titles in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Barbosa edged Indiana's Kevin Swander in the shorter race and Alabama's Avlad Polyakov in the 200 breast.
