NEW COMMIT: Auburn University has picked up another verbal commitment for the class of 2023, this time from Cincinnati, Ohio native Grady Wheeler.

Wheeler does his club swimming with Mason Manta Rays where he has his U.S. Open cut in the mile. He capped off his long course season at Junior Nationals with four lifetime bests after a strong showing at the TYR Pro Swim Series – Columbus. At ISCA Junior Nationals in March, he won the 1000 free (9:19.81) and was the runner-up in the mile (15:47.56).

At the Ohio State Championships as a junior, he finished eighth in the 500 free (4:43.00) and 14th in the 200 free (1:43.02) to help Saint Xavier High School win their tenth-straight OHSAA title. Wheeler has continuously gotten faster each season, shaving 37 seconds off his mile, ten from his 1000 and 11 off his 500 over the past two years.

He told Swimming World:

“I’m excited to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Auburn University! With the amazing coaches and team, I knew it was the perfect fit for me. I’d like to thank God, my family, and friends for helping me along the way. War Eagle!!”

His best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:41.55
  • 500 free – 4:32.04
  • 1000 free – 9:19.81
  • 1650 free – 15:45.62

Wheeler will make for a great addition in Auburn’s distance group when he arrives on campus for the 2019-20 season. He’ll have two years of overlap with top returning distance swimmer Josh Dannhauser who placed eighth in the mile at the 2018 SEC Championships.
