NEW COMMIT: The U.S. Military Academy (Army) has received a verbal commitment from Spring, Texas native Jacob Powell, who will join as a member of the class of 2023.

Powell does his club swimming with Premier Aquatics Club of Kelin (PACK Swimming) and is a six-time Junior National qualifier. He was the runner-up in the 100m free (52.73) at the Southern Zone Senior Championships in August and recorded four lifetime bests. At Speedo Junior Nationals West in December, he placed 21st in the 100 free (45.48) and swam a best time in the 50 free as a relay leadoff.

Also swimming for Klein High School, Powell is a three-time finalist at the Texas 6A State Championships. As a junior, he finished third in the 100 free (45.11) and sixth in the 200 IM (1:51.12) after placing seventh in the 100 free (45.92) during his sophomore season. He has also earned NISCA All-American honors twice in his career.

He told Swimming World:

“West Point is a phenomenal place and even now I can’t begin to describe how excited I am to go there. Swimming has opened many doors and helped me make some of the closest friends of my life and I can’t wait to continue this journey as I begin my college career.“

His best times include:

  • 50 free – 20.91
  • 100 free – 45.11
  • 200 free – 1:40.23
  • 100 back – 50.06
  • 200 back – 1:48.73
  • 200 IM – 1:51.12

Powell will be valuable to Army in a range of events when he arrives on campus for the 2019-20 season. He would’ve scored in the A-final of the 100 free, 100 back and 200 back and the B-final of the 200 free and 200 IM at the 2018 Patriot League Championships.
