Arizona State Water Polo Falls To No. 1 USC 12-6 In MPSF Tournament Opener
HONOLULU, Hawaii, April 25. THE No. 8 Arizona State University water polo team lost 12-6 to No. 1 USC on Friday on the first day of the MPSF Championships in Hawai'i. The loss sends the Sun Devils to 13-13 on the season.
Senior Addison McGrath scored three goals in the loss, marking her 64th career multiple-goal game and 42nd game with three or more goals.
Junior Kelly Phelps scored twice, her fifth straight game with multiple goals, and junior Bonnie Miles added one goal for the Devils. Freshman goalie Dana Harvey had five saves.
ASU hung tough with the top-ranked Trojans, who had won each of the three previous meetings between the teams this season by nine or more goals. The game was tied 3-3 after the first quarter, and the Sun Devils trailed by only one at the break. However, USC took control in the second half, outscoring ASU 6-1 in the third and fourth quarters to secure the victory.
The Sun Devils will now face No. 6 San Jose State at 3 p.m. Hawaii time on Saturday in a loser's bracket game of the MPSF Championships.
