Arizona State to Hold Alumni Meet This Weekend

TEMPE, Arizona, September 29. ARIZONA STATE will open its season on Saturday morning with its annual alumni meet, slated for 9 a.m. at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Complex. The matchup will feature current Sun Devils against former standouts in a nine-event slate. Races will be held in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle, 50 free, 100 individual medley, 50 butterfly, 100 free, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and the 200 free relay.

Nick Brunelli is one of the alums expected to participate. The Pac-10 Conference champion in the 200 freestyle in 2004, Brunelli is one of the top sprinters in the United States and is coming off a summer in which he competed at the World Championships in Montreal. He’ll be joined by the likes of Cam Reid, an All-American in the early 1980s and Florencia Szigeti, a two-time Olympian for Argentina.

This year’s Sun Devils are led by sophomore Caitlin Andrew (San Antonio, Texas) on the women’s side and senior David Kolozar (Budapest, Hungary) on the men’s side. Several newcomers on both the men’s and women’s squads will also debut in the Maroon and Gold. Mark Bradshaw’s diving squad, led by four-time NCAA springboard champion Joona Puhakka (Helsinki, Finland), will not compete in the alumni meet, but will be practicing during the morning for fans to watch.

The Sun Devils officially open the season Oct. 21 at the University of Hawaii.
