Arizona State Intrasquad Kicks Off Sun Devil Season

TEMPE, Ariz. October 3. ARIZONA State University’s swimming and diving season opened up Friday afternoon with the annual Maroon and Gold Intrasquad Meet at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center, as reported by the school.

The fans were treated to 13 events featuring both swimmers and divers with the Sun Devils being split into one maroon team and one gold team. The meet saw the maroon team top the gold team, 138-114. The maroon and gold teams were selected by the seniors of this year's squad with the senior women selecting the women's maroon and gold lineups and likewise for the women.

Freshmen Sarah Fischer (gold) and Lucas Azevedo (maroon) got things started with two wins apiece in the distance events. Fischer took the 1000 freestyle (10:12.74) and in the 500 freestyle (4:56.93), while Azevedo touched the wall first in both with times of 9:22.21 and 4:36.14 respectively.

Also off to a strong start for the Sun Devils is freshman CJ Nuess (gold) who claimed first-place in the 400 IM (4:03.75) and the 200 breaststroke (2:04.58) while finishing second in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:27.05.

Other first-place highlights on the day included senior Florencia Szigeti (maroon) in the 200 freestyle (1:52.17), senior Jeff Barrett (maroon) in the 200 freestyle (1:42.13), senior Cara DeVinny (gold) in the 400 IM (4:27.40), junior David Kolozar (maroon) in the 200 butterfly (1:51.59) and freshman Caitlin Andrew (gold) in the 100 freestyle (51.06).

The divers also saw action on the afternoon with sophomore Cassidy Farwell (maroon) and junior Brant Bingham (maroon) claiming first-place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Farwell notched a score of 99.00 on the 1-meter and a 188.70 on the 3-meter, while Bingham scored 108.00 on the 1-meter and 203.78 on the 3-meter.

The divers even got in the swim of things, literally, with NCAA springboard champion Joona Puhakka popping in a :25.13 for fun in the 50 freestyle!

The Sun Devils will be back in action in two weeks for the ASU Pentathlon at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center, Saturday, October 16 at 9 a.m. The diving squad does not compete until October 22 when they play host to UNLV.
