Arizona 5A Division II State Championships

PHOENIX, Arizona, November 9. THE Rincon boys went head-to-head with Horizon at the Arizona 5A Division II State Championships. Rincon won by merely 2.5 points (345.5) ahead of Horizon (343), followed by Boulder Creek's third place finish (214.5). The Pinnacle girls captured first with 368 points, Boulder Creek placed second (265), and Horizon took third (237).

Boys Individual Results
Boulder Creek opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. The group of Zachary Birnbrich, Jared Horn, Joe Baxter, and Brian Schoppaul finished in 1:39.46.

Birnbrich earned AA-C cuts in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. He clocked a 46.42 and 52.77 respectively.

Marcos de Niza's Samuel Dorman beat his opponents in the 1 meter diving competition with a score of 539.40.

Senior Spencer Knight of Horizon took first in the 200 freestyle (1:44.57) and 100 butterfly (52.96). He combined with Seth Bogen, Derek Chappell, and Axel Olson for a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The four swimmers touched in with a time of 1:28.12, receiving an AA-C cut.

Knight's teammates, Jared Young and Jeff Amlee, had individual wins as well. Young captured a win in the 500 freestyle (4:52.35). Amlee sprinted a 21.25 in the 50 freestyle, receiving an AA-C cut. Both boys united with Aaron Weintraub and Alex Doumas for a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:15.19).

Girls Individual Results
Pinnacle took control of the meet with wins in all three relays. Lindsey LaPorte, Chloe Broenen, Kacey Milligan, and Ashley Evans combined for a win in the 200 medley relay. Their 1:50.99 finish was nearly .14 off the AA-C cut.

Milligan continued with a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly (57.17).

Evans, a junior, received AA-A cuts in both of her individual events. She defeated her opponents in the 200 freestyle, touching 13.42 seconds ahead of the competition. The result was the same in the 500 freestyle; which she won by 22.55 seconds.

LaPorte earned AA-A cuts in her individual events as well. She swam the 100 backstroke in 55.91 and the 100 freestyle in 51.28.

Evans, LaPorte, and Milligan teamed up with Brianna Lanute for a time of 3:31.28 in the 400 freestyle relay, receiving an AA-A cut.

Katelyn Weddle (Kofa), who is a four-star recruit in the Swimming World College Recruit Rankings powered by Take Your Marks, swam a 24.79 in the 50 freestyle for a first-place finish. She touched in one second ahead of her opponent, freshman Erica Stock of Deer Valley, in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.84. Weddle received her AA-A cut and was .42 seconds off Christine Olson's 2007 Arizona 5A State record.

Kaitlyn McLeod of Rincon scored 13.90 points higher than her sister, Kristyn McLeod, to win the 1 meter diving competition (337.95).

Brenna Fain, Broenen, Jennifer LaPorte, and Lanute touched in .29 seconds ahead of Boulder Creek in the 200 freestyle relay (1:44.99).
