The final night of competition from the 2017 Australian Swimming Championships went down in Brisbane Thursday night as more World Championship spots were up for grabs. Emma McKeon picked up another event for the World Championships in the 200 butterfly, while 16-year-old Ariarne Titmus won her second event of the week, posting the fastest time in the world in the 400 free (4:04.82). Bronte Campbell also out-dueled her sister in the 50 free (24.56) and Mack Horton took care of business in the 1500 (14:51.21).

Women’s 200 IM

Emily Seebohm won her third event of the week with a victorious 200 IM swim. Seebohm already qualified for Budapest in the 100 and 200 back, but missed the automatic qualifying time in the 200 IM with a 2:11.89. 2:11.39 was the time she was aiming for to get on the World’s team, but regardless she will still be going to defend her 100 and 200 back titles. This is Seebohm’s 21st national title overall in her career.

Second in the event was Blair Evans at 2:12.99, ahead of fellow Olympian Kotuku Ngawati at 2:13.15. Seebohm is now ranked fifth in the world for 2017 in the 200 IM behind Sydney Pickrem (2:09.56), Melanie Margalis (2:10.43), Katinka Hosszu (2:10.46) and Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson (2:10.97).

Taylor McKeown, Mikkayla Sheridan, Tessa Wallace, Abbey Harkin and Aisling Scott also swam in the championship final.

Women’s 200 Butterfly

With the absence of Olympic silver medalist Madeline Groves, the 200 butterfly field was wide open. Emma McKeon clinched a spot on the World’s team in her fourth event with a win in the 200 fly over Olympian Brianna Throssell. McKeon won a wire to wire race swimming the fastest time in the world this year at 2:07.37 ahead of Throssell’s 2:08.03, the second fastest time in the world this year. McKeon takes the top spot from Russia’s Svetlana Chimrova (2:08.57). Throssell missed the automatic qualifying time for Budapest.

McKeon now has qualified for Budapest in the 100 free, 100 fly, 200 free and now the 200 fly. Along with all three relays, McKeon will be one of the busiest swimmers at the World Championships. She has not competed in the 200 fly at the world stage so it is unclear if she will drop the event in favor of preparation for other events. The 200 fly final falls on the same day as the 4×200 free relay final and the 100 free semi-finals.

17-year-old Laura Taylor had an impressive swim for third with a 2:09.09. Emily Washer, Meg Bailey, Alice Stuart, Kara Svenson and Laura Day also swam in the championship final.

Women’s 400 Freestyle

16-year-old Ariarne Titmus won her second race of the meet with a massive swim in the 400 free. Titmus moved to sixth fastest Australian all-time in the event with a 4:04.82, also breaking the 16-year-old national age record for Australia, breaking the old record held by Tamsin Cook (4:06.17) from the 2015 Junior World Championships. Titmus will also compete in the 800 free and was second at this meet in the 200. Titmus now has the fastest time in the world this year over Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas (4:06.14). Titmus was way under the qualifying time that was 4:07.58.

Kiah Melverton finished second at 4:09.80 and Dahlas Rogers finished third at 4:11.38. Leah Neale, Mikayla Messer, Kareena Lee, Moesha Johnson and Jordan White also competed in the championship final.

Women’s 50 Freestyle

Bronte Campbell beat out her sister Cate Campbell in the 50 free final for the second win of the meet. Bronte won with a 24.56, just ahead of Cate (24.59) and Shayna Jack (24.66). No swimmer in the final got under the qualifying time, but it is expected Bronte will still race this event in Budapest as she is the defending world champion. Cate has already indicated she will be taking the World Championships off in preparation for the 2018 home Commonwealth Games. Shayna Jack’s time is the third fastest ever for an 18-year old behind Alice Mills (24.49) and Bronte Campbell (24.59).

Bronte’s missing of the automatic qualifying time is just another case of world class swimmers winning national titles, but not swimming fast enough for the qualifying times. It is expected that a lot of these swimmers will be able to pick up these events they missed, since they already made the team in other events, but that is unclear at the moment and we will know officially when we get a final roster.

Bronte’s swim ranks her fourth in the world behind Sarah Sjostrom (23.83), Pernille Blume (24.14) and Ranomi Kromowidjojo (24.34). Brittany Elmslie, Holly Barratt, Sara Saal, Eliza King and Natasha Ramsden also competed in the championship final.

Men’s 1500 Freestyle

Mack Horton swam a stellar 14:51.21 to qualify for the World Championships in the 1500. Horton is already on the team in the 400 and also won the 200 earlier in the week. Horton pulled along Jack McLoughlin to a qualifying time at 14:54.95 after the two went neck and neck the entire race before Horton pulled away over the second half. Horton is now third in the world behind the two-headed Italian monster in Gregorio Paltrinieri (14:37.08) and Gabriele Detti (14:48.21). Horton will be looking to improve on his disappointing swim at the 2015 World Championships when he failed to make the final, finishing 11th.

McLoughlin has made his first World Championship team after finishing 9th last summer at the Olympics. Joshua Parrish, Jacob Vincent, Ethan Owens, Max Osborn, Ben Roberts and Kai Edwards finished in the top eight.

Men’s 50 Breast

The 50 breast is generally not viewed as a closing event, but Australia has put together a rather strange event order so this is what we are dealing with. Tommy Sucipto finished the meet with a victory in the 50 breast with a 27.55, just ahead of 100 champ Daniel Cave (27.66) and 200 champ Matthew Wilson (27.91).

Liam Hunter, Grayson Bell, James McKenchnie, Joshua Palmer and Matej Kuchar also swam in the championship final.
