Andrii Govorov Qualifies First for 50 Freestyle Semifinals

Ukraine’s Andrii Govorov led the way by just over a tenth this morning, blasting his way to a 21.49 in prelims of the 50 freestyle.

American record holder Nathan Adrian swam a 21.61 this morning, fresh off his 100 freestyle bronze medal. His teammate Anthony Ervin earned Olympic gold in this event in 2000. This morning the veteran was long into the wall, but finished in 21.63 for the third seed tonight.

France’s Florent Manaudou stopped the clock in 21.72 to qualify fourth. Manaudou looked good with a 47.14 split on France’s 400 free relay Sunday night, but this was his first race since as he did not compete in the 100 free. Manaudou will be going for his second-straight Olympic gold medal in the event.

Cameron McEvoy of Australia finished seventh in last night’s 100 freestyle final, but he bounced back to win his prelims heat in 21.80. Just .01 behind was Russia’s Vladimir Morozov in 27.81.

Ben Proud of Great Britain and Santo Condorelli of Canada tied in 21.83 in heat nine. The two swimmers head to semifinals in seventh.

Luca Dotto of Italy posted a 21.87 this morning. Kristian Gkolomeev of Greece and Brazil’s Bruno Fratus both touched in 21.93 this morning to tie for the tenth seed. Just .01 behind was Brad Tandy of South Africa in 21.94. Brazil’s Italo Duarte snagged the 13th seed with a 21.96.

In another tie, Japan’s Shinri Shioura and Simonas Bilis of Lithuania take the 14th seed with their matching 22.01s.

Romania’s Norbert Trandafir will complete tonight’s semifinals with a 22.10.
