Amelia Schaefer, Paige Sugra Lend Verbal Commitments to Connecticut Huskies

NEW COMMITS: The University of Connecticut has received their first set of verbal commitments for the 2021-22 season and beyond from Chantilly, Va. native Amelia Schaefer and Paige Sugra of Hainesport, N.J.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to further my academic and athletic career at the University of Connecticut! I am beyond thankful to my friends and family for all of their support and to my coaches who have helped me achieve my goals. I can’t wait to be a Husky and to see what the future holds! Go Huskies!”

A versatile swimmer, Schaefer does her club swimming with Machine Aquatics and finaled in two events at Potomac Valley Seniors in March. Last summer, she raced five events at NCSAs where she achieved best times in the 50m breast, 100m breast, and 50m free.

Her best times include:

  • 500 free – 5:06.01
  • 100 breast – 1:04.78
  • 200 breast – 2:21.00
  • 200 IM – 2:09.41

Also competing for Chantilly High School, Schaefer has raced at the Virginia 6A State Championships the past three years. She placed 14th in both the 100 breast and 500 free during her sophomore season while taking 11th in the former event as a freshman.

PAIGE SUGRA

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim at the University of Connecticut! I would like to thank my coaches, family and friends who have helped me along the way! Go Huskies!”

Primarily a backstroker, Sugra swims year-round with MLY Phoenix and earned silver in the 100 back at the 27th Arena Capital Classic in December where she also took fourth in the 200 back. She also raced both the 100m and 200m backstroke events at Middle Atlantic LCM Seniors last summer.

Her best times include:

  • 50 back – 26.59
  • 100 back – 55.86
  • 200 back – 2:03.61

A rising senior at Rancocas Valley Regional High School, Sugra has competed at the New Jersey Meet of Champions the last two seasons. As a junior, she raced to ninth place in the 100 back and took eighth in that event during her sophomore season.
