Amalie Mortensen, Julia Heimstead Lead Arizona to Pac-12 win over UCLA
Julia Heimstead won all four times she stepped on the block Saturday, and Amalie Mortensen added a pair of wins to Arizona’s 138.5-123.5 win over UCLA.
The win is Arizona’s first Pac-12 victory of the season. It’s the first win over UCLA since the 2017-18 campaign.
Heimstead was part of both winning relays for the Wildcats, who won 10 of the 14 swimming events. She was quickest in the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:59.40 for a 1-2 with teammate Madeline Burt. She added the 100 fly title in 54.40, a race where the top four swimmers were separated by .30 seconds.
Mortensen won the 200 freestyle in 1:49.12, a margin of more than two seconds to second place. She clocked in at 4:58.30 in the 500 free. Mortensen split 50.51 to bring home the winning 400 free relay.
Joining Heimstead on the medley foursome was Aria Bernal, who won the 100 back ahead of teammate Felicity Passon. Passon would win the 200 back then lead off the 400 free relay. Jade Neser went from the medley relay win to a victory in the 100 breast. Grace Anderson was on both relays and tied for second in the 50 free behind teammate Chloe Clark.
Rachel Rhee and Brooke Schaffer went 1-2 in the 100 free to lead UCLA. Bailey Herbert won the 200 breast after finishing second in the 100, and Ella Kirschke won the 200 individual medley.
Rhee was also second in the 200 free. Paige Maceachern was second in both the 500 free and 1,000 free. Gabby Dang was second in the 100 fly and tied for second in the 50 free.
