NEW COMMIT: The University of Alabama has secured another verbal commitment for their growing Class of 2027 from U.S. Open qualifier Sydney Blackhurst out of Gilbert, Arizona.

She will join Laurel Blase of Woodstock, Georgia, in Tuscaloosa at the start of the 2023-24 season.

She told Swimming World:

“I am beyond excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and swimming careers at the University of Alabama! A huge thank you to all my family, friends, and coaches who made this all possible. ROLL TIDE!!”

A talented breaststroker, Blackhurst trains with Scottsdale Aquatics Club and most recently earned bronze in the 100m breast at Austin Sectionals this past summer after earning best times in all of her events at the TYR 18&U Spring Cup – Des Moines in the spring. She also had a pair of top-6 finishes at Four Corner Sectionals in March and collected silver in the 200 breast and bronze in the 100 breast at Arizona Seniors.

Her best times include:

  • 100 breast – 1:02.28
  • 200 breast – 2:12.84
  • 200 IM – 2:04.50
  • 400 IM – 4:26.10

Currently a junior at Camp Verde High School, Blackhurst placed third in the 100 breast and fifth in the 200 IM at the Arizona DII State Championships as a freshman. She then finished sixth and 10th, respectively, in those events at the 2019 Arizona Meet of Champions.

The Crimson Tide is fresh off a historic season that included a fourth-place showing at the SEC Championships and a fifth-place finish at NCAAs. Alabama won the 4×100 freestyle relay at NCAAs, earning the school’s first-ever relay title in program history on the women’s side.
