Aggies Top Houston 155-115 for School-Record 10th Win

HOUSTON, Tex, February 8. THE No. 14 Texas A&M swimming and diving team won its 10th dual meet of the season by beating the University of Houston 155-115 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.

The 2003-04 Aggies became the first group in school history to crack the 10-win plateau. The previous record of eight wins was first set in 1995-96. A&M captured eight wins in each of the last four seasons entering this campaign.

"We had no idea that eight wins was most any team had ever won," A&M Head Coach Steve Bultman said. "It just adds to the special year we are having along with hosting the first-ever NCAA Championship event for women on the A&M campus. We have set high goals for the season. Earning 10 wins is just a byproduct of being focused on the high expectations we have for ourselves."

The Aggies won all 14 events in the pool with many of their swimmers competing in non-specialty events. Houston's Anna Kiess captured both diving events.

A&M's depth was on full display as junior Courtney Patterson was the only Aggie to win more than one individual event. Patterson, normally a backstroke/individual medley specialist, won both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.05) and the 100 freestyle (54.18).

Sophomore freestyle sprinter Katy Lieb turned in an impressive time of 5:01.44 in the 500 free, the second longest event of the day. The Brookfield, Wis., native is now among the team leaders in the event despite having swam the 500 once all year.

Freshman Rebecca Sturdy won the 200 backstroke by more than seven seconds after clocking a time of 2:05.95. Sturdy also led off the first place 200 medley relay squad. Sturdy, Erin Brisie, Michelle Bird and Ewelina Zwierzykowski finished in the top spot with a time of 1:45.35. Sturdy and Zwierzykowski teamed with Patterson and Britney Pesek to win the 400 free relay in 3:33.47.

Big 12 Swimmer of the Month Danielle Townsend continued her winning ways with a victory in the 100 backstroke (57.97).

Other Aggies claiming victory against the Cougars were: Bird, 100 fly, 57.80; Michelle Kohutek, 200 breast, 2:24.14; Casey Mucha, 1000 freestyle, 10:35.30; Meghan Nebera, 200 fly, 2:06.08; Pesek, 50 free, 24.33; Christina Thompson, 400 IM, 4:31.08; and Zwierzykowski, 200 free, 1:53.55.
