ACC Championships, Night 1 Finals: Florida State Men, Louisville Women Start with 200 Medley Relay Wins

The 2026 ACC Championships are off to a perhaps surprising start, with Louisville’s women and the Florida State men winning the 200 medley relay.

The two relays opened the swimming competition Tuesday night at Georgia Tech’s McAuley Aquatic Center after two days of diving. Louisville leapt from the third seed and denied Virginia the win in this event for a second straight year, while Florida State entered as the top seed in the men’s medley relay and defended a slim margin.

Team scores after diving and two of the five relays:

The action from night 1 (of swimming):

Women’s 200 medley relay

For a second straight year, the Virginia program that holds all the records in women’s relays didn’t win this one, though the Cavaliers improved from fourth to second. They were still two tenths behind Louisville, which won in 1:32.26, a second quicker than their in-season time.

That time came before Anastasia Gorbenko was on board to split 25.49 in breaststroke. Julie Mishler, Caroline Larsen and Julia Dennis comprised the team. Dennis split 20.63 off the end to carve nearly eight tenths out of Virginia’s lead.

Virginia’s team of Sara Curtis, Emma Weber, Claire Curzan and Bryn Greenwaldt went 1:32.46, a half-second slower than their seed time. Stanford, with Torri Huske splitting 21.78 in fly, was third. California was fourth with NC State fifth. The top seven teams, including Duke in sixth and North Carolina in seventh, earned NCAA cuts.

Women’s platform diving

Stanford freshman Ellie Cole led all the way, scoring a massive 392.40 points to win platform for the Cardinal. Teammate Emilie Moore was fifth. The point total dashes the meet record set in 2015 by Florida State’s Katrina Young and the ACC record dating to 2008 from Brittany Viola of Miami. Cole is the second straight Stanford diver to win this event, with Anna Lemkin winning it last year.

Only two other divers crossed 300 points. That includes North Carolina’s Sofia Knight, who was second with 324.80 in medaling in all three events at the 2026 ACC Championships. Kayleigh Clark of FSU was also fourth in 3-meter. Cal got a boost in the team standings with Arianna Drake sixth and Violet Williamson eighth.

Women’s 800 freestyle relay

Virginia didn’t end the night without stamping its dominance on at least one event, this time the 800 free relay that has been the program’s bread and butter. The quartet of Aimee Canny, Madi Mintenko, Cavan Gormsen and Anna Moesch set a pool record to win by nearly five seconds in 6:45.34. The time brushes 1.2 seconds within the mark that Virginia set last year – with Canny as the only holdover – at this meet, which stands as the American, NCAA and U.S. Open records.

Cal improved its seed time by more than five seconds for second place in 6:50.15, Mia West delivering a 1:40.95. that joined Moesch’s 1:40.42 s the only 1:40-points.

Stanford was third, albeit three seconds off their in-season time. Louisville added an NCAA cut in fourth, as dd NC State and Pitt. Virginia Tech and Notre Dame hit the provisional NCAA cut.

Men’s 800 freestyle relay

Stanford entered as the third seed by dropped nearly five seconds to pick up the win in 6:07.40 in a thriller by .02.

The quartet of Andres Dupont Cabrera, Ethan Ekk, Jason Zhao and Henry McFadden got the job done, with the work was done by McFadden’s 1:29.84 on the end, surging past NC State for the win. The Wolf pack were out front in the first leg via Kaii Winkler’s 1:30.92, though Virginia led at the halfway point with matching 1:31s – nearly literally, at 1:31.46 and 1:31.45 –from Maximus Williamson and David King.

NC State ended up second in 6:07.42 with Winkler, Jerry Fox, Hudson Williams and Daniel Diehl. California snuck into third in 6:09.53, thanks to 1:31s from Keaton Jones and Ryan Erisman. Virginia slid to fourth in 6:10.17, but that still easily heads to NCAAs. So does SMU in fifth, Florida State in sixth, Louisville, Virginia Tech and Pitt in the top nine. Notre Dame in 10th and UNC in 11th have provisional cuts.
