ACC Championships, Day 4 Prelims: Noah Nichols Ties 100 Breast Meet Record

The 2023 ACC Championships have some serious strength in the women’s stroke distances, and that was on display Friday in the fourth morning session. But the lone record of the morning session belonged to the men’s side of the draw.

Virginia junior Noah Nichols went 51.03 in the men’s 100 breaststroke to tie the conference and ACC Championships record, set in 2021 by Louisville’s Evgenii Somov.

The full morning session recap:

Women’s 100 backstroke

American record-holder Katharine Berkoff may not make a run at her time of 48.74 Friday night. But the meet record that she set last year at 49.41 is certainly in play, after she went 50.53 in the morning session. She’s nearly a second ahead of teammate Kennedy Noble, the second seed in 51.46. The Wolfpack jammed four swimmers into the top six, with Kylee Alons and Emma Muzzy following. Virginia nabbed the third seed via Reilly Tiltmann.

Men’s 100 backstroke

Giovanni Izzo continued a strong meet by taking the top seed in the 100 back in 45.41, but the field is crowded. The eight finalists were separated by seventh tenths, with Hunter Tapp missing out on the A final. NC State had to settle for the top two spots in the final, Izzo followed .17 seconds later by Kacper Stokowski.

Notre Dame freshman Tommy Janton is the third seed, followed by Georgia Tech’s Berke Saka. Matt Brownstead of Virginia is also lurking in sixth in his off event.

Women’s 100 breaststroke

Alex Walsh may face a race in her quest to get Virginia more points. She was the top seed in 58.79 in the morning, and while she’s the only swimmer in the field with a sub-50 time, she had a crowd close behind her. Leading it the NC State duo of Andrea Podmanikova in 58.95 and Heather McCausland in 59.04. (The latter has a 58.16 this season). Miami scored a rare A finalist via grad student Tara Vovk. It took sub-minute to reach the A final, Virginia’s Anna Keating missing out with a 1:00.00 for ninth.

Men’s 100 breaststroke

The last event of the morning produced a meet record via Virginia’s Noah Nichols, who went 51.03 to lead the way in the 100 breast. It ties the conference mark set in 2021. Nichols had been 51.44 this season and entered as the top seed, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Second was NC State’s Mason Hunter in 51.76. The other owner of a time in the 51s this season entering the meet, Virginia Tech’s Carles Coll Marti, went 51.84 for the third seed. He leads three Hokies in the final.
